Local Information

Cherryhayes Bed & Breakfast is located within walking distance (half a mile) of Staverton village, home to The Sea Trout Inn and the pretty church of St Paul de Leon. You can also reach the village via a pretty walk along the river which is a very pleasant way to build up an appetite for an evening meal in the pub. Ask Anne or Peter for directions. Local fishing permits can also be obtained in the pub. More information about Staverton can be found at www.staverton.com.

Dartington’s North Wood is also a short distance away from Cherryhayes and provides attractive walks to Dartington Hall and Totnes. For the more adventurous, Dartmoor is a short drive away from Staverton and there are numerous local companies that can help arrange hiking, fishing, shooting or horse riding safely on the moor. Whilst the weather on Dartmoor can be unpredictable, those caught in the famous Devon drizzle can dry their coats in front of the Aga in the kitchen, or just warm their boots during breakfast!

Part of the South Devon Railway, Staverton Bridge Station remains in operation today and is looked after by the Staverton Preservation Group - a dedicated group of volunteers from the South Devon Railway Association. Steam trains run regularly between Buckfastleigh and Totnes throughout the year, including seasonal Santa Specials and Thomas the Tank Engine days for the younger enthusiast. The station is also often host to local beer festivals during the summer. You can find more information on the station and railway at www.southdevonrailway.org.

The railway links Staverton to Buckfastleigh, a small market town on the edge of Dartmoor. This busy little town is also home to Buckfast Abbey and The Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Butterfly Farm. Information about opening times and special offers are available at www.ottersandbutterflies.co.uk.

At the other end of the railway line is Totnes. One of the oldest boroughs in England, Totnes is a thriving community well known for its alternative community and as a centre for art, theatre and music. There are a variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants as well unique shops and galleries to while away a few hours in. Local markets are held on Fridays and Saturdays as well as an Elizabethan market each Tuesday (May-September). For information on what to do in Totnes, visit www.visitdevon.co.uk.
